What is the AFCOMA Mentoring Program?

Answer: A program that emphasizes a partnership arrangement between mentees and mentors in which mentees express an interest in pursuing career goals and professional aspirations followed by a desire of mentors to share their knowledge, skills, and organizational insights.

 

What is Mentoring?

Answer: Mentoring is an active and sincere effort designed to develop the full potential of an individual through the sharing of knowledge, skills, and organizational insight.

 

Who is a Mentor and Mentee?

Answer: A mentor is a teacher, coach, guide, and communicator.  A mentee is the driver, learner, evaluator, and communicator.

 

How Long is the Program?

Answer: Currently, the formal mentoring program spans a six-month period.

 

Who Can Participate in the Program?

Answer: Officers at the grades of 0-1 to 0-10 and civilians at the grade of GS-9 to SES.

 

What Can I Expect If I Sign Up as a Mentee?

Answer: Signing a 6-month mentoring agreement with your mentor acknowledging a commitment to consistent engagements targeted to develop you.  The mentee will complete a 10-year plan highlighting essential leadership developmental needs, goals, expectations, self-assessments, and desired outcomes.  As a mentee, you will enter a professional partnership between yourself and mentor(s) based upon common goals and interests.

 

What Can I Expect If I Volunteer as a Mentor?

Answer:  Signing a 6-month mentoring agreement with your mentee acknowledging a commitment to consistent engagements with your mentee(s). Serve as the teacher, coach, guide, and communicator to your mentee(s).  Navigate your mentees through their 10-year plan by providing actionable feedback and practical insights.  As a mentor, you will enter a professional partnership between yourself and mentees based upon common goals and interests.

 

What are the Potential Benefits to Me as a Mentor?

Answer: Gain new perspectives, receive personal satisfaction, sharpen your management and leadership/interpersonal skills, and learn as you teach.

 

What Are the Potential Benefits to Me as a Mentee?

Answer: Improve your overall performance; identify more realistic career goals, strategies, and options; build higher confidence; develop an ability to create a targeted action plan; experience increased opportunities for continuous learning and coaching; gain access to a sounding board; and acquire a greater understanding of the Air Force, its culture, and operations.
